SkaiBlu is an e-commerce consultancy assisting clients in the aviation industry in their assessment, development, and implementation of strategic digital solutions. Founded in 2006 by Dr. Michael Hanke, a former United Airlines executive, SkaiBlu is based in Los Angeles. From Airbus Industrie, Air China, and IATA to LAM Mozambique Airlines, McKinsey, and Turkish Airlines, over 25 companies benefit from SkaiBlu’s proven experience in digital aviation today.
Founder and Managing Director
Michael is a seasoned executive with 15 years of experience at United Airlines. He held several roles in sales & marketing with the company in Frankfurt including Manager Sales Planning overseeing a $200 million revenue plan for Germany & Austria. He was assistant to the Sr. VP – International in Chicago supporting United’s worldwide marketing, sales, and airport operations. From 2000 to 2006, Michael was responsible for united.com in 25 countries and led the company’s global activities in web product development, online marketing, e-sales & distribution, and web customer service.
Michael received his doctorate in Airline Economics from Cranfield University, UK. He earned an MSc in International Strategy & Diplomacy at the London School of Economics and an MBA at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the US. His undergraduate degree in Business Administration was completed at the University of Hamburg, Germany. Michael holds an FAA private pilot license and is also a book author on the subject of airline e-commerce (“Airline E-commerce: Log on.Take off.”).
Chief Operations & Finance
Karen spearheads SkaiBlu’s strategy activities, bringing to our clients over 20 years of experience and helping improve both the top and bottom line performance. She is ardent about applying analytics and processes in order to drive better business decision and improved efficiencies at SkaiBlu’s clients. Prior to joining SkaiBlu, Karen was Assistant Vice President at the Capital Group and supervised portfolio control, global and emerging markets. In this role, she managed the construction, monitoring, and asset allocation of global equity, fixed income and emerging market portfolios totaling US$94 billion. She was the subject matter expert for currency contract processing and a business owner of a US$15 million proprietary system application. She volunteers at the Fulfillment Fund and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Karen earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Finance, Accounting, and Mathematics from Millersville University of Pennsylvania.
Fernando leads SkaiBlu in providing strategic direction in all technology-related issues in support of airline e-commerce operations. He plays an integral role in establishing technical visions, developing product road maps, and leading crucial aspects of technology development and system maintenance.
Previously, he was involved in several e-commerce start-ups in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was also responsible for United Airlines’ IT activities in Latin America. He pioneered the implementation of the company’s first CMS, wireless applications, and SEO/SEM program across the region for 10 countries.He attended Universidade Paulista (UNIP) in Sao Paulo and completed his studies with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. He speaks fluent Spanish and Portuguese.
Chief Data Analytics
Jason brings 15 years of data analysis and research experience to SkaiBlu. In the area of digital aviation analytics, his specialties include the mining of data marts and data warehouses for analyzing companies’ performance in e-marketing, e-sales & distribution, and web customer service.
Prior to SkaiBlu, Jason worked for several blue chip companies including United Airlines and ACNielsen where he led all online qualitative and quantitative research, project managed various pricing, consumer segmentation, and marketing mix effectiveness initiatives, created/provided numerous performance reports for senior management, and also served as the primary liaison to multiple web analytics vendors. Jason holds a master degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Minnesota State University and a BA in Psychology from the University of South Florida, Tampa.

Michael oversees SkaiBlu’s e-marketing & e-sales strategy projects. He brings over 20 years of experience in international sales and marketing from positions at leading travel companies. He is skilled in interpreting business requirements to deliver creative solutions that increase revenue, decrease costs and build customer loyalty. Prior to joining Skaiblu in 2017, Michael worked at United Airlines in various sales and marketing roles including managing the introduction of international E-Ticket and leading a cross-functional team in devising the transition plan for a new international premium product.
Most recently he developed business for Cheapflights compare and meta search web sites globally to position the company for sale to Kayak, part of Booking Holdings in 2017. As a cross-cultural communicator and cross-functional organizer Michael leverages his strong analytical, collaborative and decisive leadership skills to deliver solutions that exceed customer expectations.
Michael earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Business Administration from The University of South Wales, U.K. and a Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing in the United Kingdom.
